Drones and Beneficial Wasps Join Forces Against the European Corn Borer in Serbia

The European corn borer (Ostrinia nubilalis) is one of the most damaging pests in maize production. Now, thanks to a blend of science, technology, and sustainable farming practices, Serbia has taken a major step forward in controlling this pest — without relying on harmful chemical pesticides.

Trichogramma wasps are natural enemies of the European corn borer, laying their eggs inside pest eggs to stop damage before it begins. Using drones to drop Trichogramma capsules ensures fast, even coverage — a greener, more effective alternative to chemical pesticides.

As part of the Horizon Europe CREDIT Vibes Project, Trichogramma capsules were applied by drone for the first time in organic fields in Serbia last year — a groundbreaking step for the region. This year, we are proud to see Al Dahra Serbia adopting the very same sustainable pest control technology, proving how innovation from research can quickly move into real-world agricultural practice.

This milestone is the result of exceptional teamwork:

This collaboration between science, technology, and agriculture showcases how innovative, eco-friendly solutions can build a greener and more resilient future for crop protection.
