Researchers from the Maize Research Institute “Zemun Polje” participated in the 39th EFFoST International Conference 2025, held from 17–19 November 2025 in Porto, Portugal. The conference, themed “Fostering the Transition to Sustainable Food Systems: Embracing Novelty and Overcoming Challenges”, gathered leading experts, industry representatives, and academic researchers dedicated to shaping the future of sustainable food production.
As part of the scientific programme, two poster presentations from MRIZP showcased recent results in the field of maize quality and sustainable agricultural practices:
1. “Non-Organic vs. Organic Maize Grains – Comparative Study on Protein, Starch, Amino Acid and Sugar”
Presenter: Beka Sarić
This research compared key nutritional components in organic and conventionally grown maize grains. The study provided insight into how different production systems influence protein, starch, amino acid profiles, and sugar content—factors essential for both food and feed quality. The findings contribute to a better understanding of the nutritional implications of sustainable cropping systems.

2. “Effects of Organic Cropping on Bioactive Compounds in Grains of Traditional Maize Varieties”
Presenter: Danka Milovanović
This poster highlighted how organic production practices affect the concentration of bioactive compounds in traditional maize varieties. The work emphasizes the importance of preserving genetic diversity and exploring environmentally friendly cropping systems that enhance grain quality and functional properties.

Through their active participation, MRI researchers contributed to the ongoing dialogue on how innovation, sustainability, and scientific evidence can support the transition toward more resilient food systems. Their work reinforces the Institute’s commitment to advancing knowledge in maize research and promoting sustainable agricultural practices.
